Black's Picturesque Guide to the County of Sussex and its watering Places
Edinburgh, Adam and Charles Black, 1875 Black's Guide Books for Tourists: Sussex. THIRD EDITION: Original green cloth boards, uneven colour through age and use, gilt title to front, and spine, corners bumped, map endpapers, a previous owner has had a name stamp made in mauve (not very bright - I mean the colour, but it could apply to the user I suppose), and this stamped name appears on the first few pages, impressed stamp to front endpaper not easy to see, looks like the first owner's name hand written on at the top of the title page as it is dated '76. This book is tastefully illustrated with charming full page engravings, smaller vignette engravings can be found in the contemporary advertisements at the rear of the book, xxii, 171 pages including index, just prior to the index there is a fold-out map of Sussex, the index is followed by publisher's. advertisements, 'Black's Guide Book Advertiser 1876' 104 pages. There is also a nice fold-out map of Brighton showing a plan of the town at this time. With Map, Charts and numerous Wood Engravings. The book draws attention to railway stations from where various areas of the County can be explored. A wonderful little travel guide pointing out places to stay and things to see. 6.75 x 4.5 inches approx. It looks like someone has made full use of this book because it is a little fragile but it is still intact, useful and fascinating. A real inspiration for lovers of Sussex and an interesting collectable.
