ANTHONY BIRD
The Damnable Duke of Cumberland. A Charactrer Study and Vindication of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover
London England, Barrie & Rockcliff, 1966. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo Hardback Hardback. First Edition. The Damnable Duke of Cumberland. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. Widley supposed to have murdered his valet, raped a lady of the court and committed incest with one of his sisters, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover, has usually been depicted by historians as the wickedest of Queen Victoria's 'wicked uncles'. Ignoring such injunctions, the auther here describes the Duke's full and interesting life, and proves the man to have been very different from the legend. A keen, courageous and efficient solder, an intelligent politician and active member of the House of Lords, and a devoted husband and father, his conduct, as Mr. Bird shows, was more firmly based on high principles and a strong sense of public duty than that of most Royal Dukes of the day. But he was a man who did not suffer fools gladly and did not easily bridle his tongue. His caustic and often witty comments made him many enemies who were only too ready to spread any malicious rumour about him. Mr. Bird is not blind to the Duke's faults, but he puts them in proportion and shows him to have been a far more interesting character than has been generally believed. Illustrated. 329 pp.
