GOLDSMITH, LADY ANNABEL
Annabel - an Unconventional Life - the Memoirs of Lady Annabel Goldsmith
London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 2004, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297829661). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which has a light crease to top edge and is not price clipped. xii + 274 pages. Londonderry Family Tree. 51 illustrations. The daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry, Annabel had a privileged upbringing, with parents who doted on their children, and idyllic years spent at the family homes, Mount Stewart and Wynyard. But her mother died tragically from cancer when Annabel was only 17, and Annabel, her sister and brother were left to cope with a father whose drinking and increasingly erratic behavious was becoming a burden on the whole family. Married at 19 to Mark Birley, Annabel's life became a whirlwind of glamorous parties, exotic holidays, much revolved around Annabel's - the Berkeley Square club that Mark Birley had founded in her name. Anabel and Mark had three children - Rupert, Robin and India Jane, however, in 1964, Annabel fell in love with, and later married, the charismatic entrepreneur, James Goldsmith. She had three more children - Jemima, Zac and Ben. Despite bearing the pressures of being one of three women in her husband's life, Annabel settled down to a happy family life at their home on the edge of Richmond Park. But tragedy was never far away: Rupert, her eldest son, died in an accident in West Africa in 1986 and in 1997, James Goldsmith died from cancer, after masterminding the Referendum Party. NOT EX LIB. Fine/Near Fine.

H. MONTGOMERY HYDE
The Strange Death of Lord Castlereagh
London England, Heinemann, 1959. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Slight shelf wear to D/J. 'It is my duty to inform you, gentlemen, that you must remove from your minds all impressions which are not borne out by the evidence'. In these words the Coroner addressed the jury at the inquest on the second Marquess of Londonderry, Foreign Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons, usually known by his courtesy title of Viscount Castlereagh, who cut his throat on August 12, 1822. For over a century, speculations upon the precise nature and cause of the statesman's tragic death by his own hand have multiplied. In this book, which contains a detailed account of the events leading to, and the various people surrounding Lord Castlereagh's suicide, the author has thrown new light on one of the enigmas of history. Not only does he follow up the various leads provided by the inquest, but he assembles and analyses all the available evidence bearing on the tragedy. Illustrated. 195 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
